Baca pit was burned by fire crews March 28; site closed two to four weeks

QUEMADO, NM, March 29, 2023 – Yesterday the Gila National Forest, Quemado Ranger District burned the Baca slash pit, located approximately 1 mile northeast of Quemado Lake Recreation Area, and 3 miles from Quemado Lake Estates. The site is closed for an estimated two to four weeks while the fuels continue to be consumed and until the ashes cool. Once the site is safe for re-entry, the community slash pit will be reopened for public use.

“The Baca pit is used in partnership with the Catron County Firewise program,” said Quemado District Ranger Randall Chavez. “This valued partnership helps to remove hazardous fuels and vegetation on and adjacent to private lands.”

Light smoke may continue to be visible to the public and may linger in the valley at night and early in the morning.

The Forest Service is coordinating with New Mexico Environment Department and following smoke management guidelines. Air quality information and health protection measures are posted online at the New Mexico Department of Health’s website:  NM-Tracking - Fires, Smoke and Health.
