Writing Workshop: Capturing Great Descriptions: Make Your Setting and Character Description Sparkle presented by Kris Neri


Kris Neri will present the next workshop in The Write Stuff writing series, a 2-hour talk: Capturing Great Descriptions: Make Your Setting and Character Description Sparkle. It will be offered on Saturday, September 16, from 10 am - noon, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Silver City, 3845 N Swan St, Silver City, NM.

Award winning author and writing instructor, Kris Neri, will present a program for writers of fiction, memoir, and creative nonfiction. This workshop will address why including a strong sense of place and rich character descriptions will make your writings come to life and make readers to bond with the material. She’ll also look at some of the mistakes she sees in the writings of newer writers. She’ll discuss how to make a static background into an active part of your narration, and how to inject all types of descriptions with perspective, mood, tone, and emotional color. Offered in the class will be two short writing exercises with feedback. Well crafted descriptions elevate the professionalism of your writing. Make yours sparkle!


Kris Neri teaches writing online for the prestigious Writers’ Program of the UCLA Extension School and other organizations. A Silver City resident, Kris writes the humorous Tracy Eaton mysteries, featuring the daughter of eccentric Hollywood stars, and the Samantha Brennan & Annabelle Haggerty magical series, which features a questionable psychic who teams up with a modern goddess-FBI agent. A four time New Mexico-Arizona Book Award winner, her next magical novel Magical Mushrooms will debut in October. She is a member of the steering committee of the Southwest Word Fiesta. The Write Stuff, a program presented by Southwest Word Fiesta and hosted by award-winning author and writing instructor Kris Neri, shares the techniques required for writers to elevate the professionalism of their works. This program present a series of in-depth writing workshops throughout the year, offered by a some of the most accomplished local authors and instructors on a variety of writing challenges. Past presenters have included Elise Stuart, Catalina Claussen, Julia Fricke Robinson, and Heather D. Frankland.

All workshops are free and open to the public. No reservations. Seating is plentiful. Small donations are solicited to pay for the space, but no donations are required.
