February 25, at 10 am, 3845 North Swan Street –  “Environmental Law, Lawyering and Local Issues”

 How does one sue the federal government to protect imperiled species and public lands? Have you ever wondered what EPCRA, FOOGLRA, and all those other environmental acronyms mean? David Becker, a mostly-retired Oregon public interest environmental lawyer, will be discussing these topics at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Silver City meeting at

10:00 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 25, at 3845 N. Swan St.

 Becker will give an overview of how federal public interest environmental litigation works and highlight a couple of cases from his public interest career, describing how courts restricted livestock grazing to protect hundreds of miles of threatened steelhead trout habitat in eastern Oregon’s Malheur National Forest and ended a proposed industrial-scale wind energy project in densely-populated desert tortoise and golden eagle habitat within what is now the Avi Kwa Ame National Monument in southern Nevada.

 He will also discuss current environmental issues in the greater Gila region—including the Air Force’s plan to expand its Military Operations Areas to allow low-level jet maneuvers and supersonic flights above rural communities and dozens of federally-protected areas like the Gila Wilderness and Chiricahua National Monument and the status of the Gila Wild and Scenic Rivers Act legislation. He will also explain how, as citizens, we can get involved in helping shape, or stop, these threats to our local environment.

 Childcare is available every Sunday. Zoey Cronin will lead a formal children's program on second and fourth Sundays.  

 Children are welcome to participate on any Sunday, but they will get the most out of the program if they attend second and fourth Sundays somewhat regularly. Family adults may stay for the children's program or attend the adult program. Children are encouraged to bring a small item that represents someone or something they are grateful for that week.

 There are speakers on the patio if you wish to enjoy the service outside.
