Closure to be in effect during Sapillo Prescribed Fire

MIMBRES, NM, April 8, 2024 – The Gila National Forest, Wilderness Ranger District is implementing an area closure while it conducts the 320-acre Sapillo prescribed fire project. The area closure goes into effect at midnight on April 8 and will remain in effect until the area is safe for public re-entry.

“Due to the proximity and upwind location of this prescribed fire project to popular camping opportunities at Sapillo Campground and Skates Canyon (“Celebration Camp”) it is necessary to close these areas to the public while fire is applied to the landscape,” said Wilderness District Ranger Brian Stultz. “The closure will be in effect only for the minimum period of time needed for the protection of public safety.”

The area closure for Sapillo prescribed fire is located along the south side of New Mexico Highway 35, west of Forest Road 88, north of Forest Roads 4078R, the Sapillo Campground, and Forest Road 960, and east of Forest Road 4206 (please see attached map). For more information contact Maribeth Pecotte at 575-388-8211 orMaribeth.Pecotte@usda.gov.
