Santa Fe, N.M. – The New Mexico Film Office is hosting a training event focused on the job of Set Medic for the film and T.V. industry on Saturday, March 23 from 12:30 to 4:00pm. This class will take place at the Special Collections Library in Botts Hall located at 423 Central Ave. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87102.

“Set Medics are so vital to a film set,” said Secretary of Economic Development Alicia J. Keyes. “We are excited to be having this training for people who are looking to contribute their talents to the New Mexico Film Industry.” 

Medic! Is never the word you want to hear shouted on a film set, but knowing one is nearby gives not only peace of mind, but is a requirement on a film set. Michelle Fox will teach students what they need to know about being a medic for the New Mexico film industry. Set medics are a covered craft of the IATSE Local 480 and are required to have at minimum a current EMT-B license and a CPR card from the State of New Mexico. Please note, this class will not provide medical training for the job, but will teach what is required of a set medic.

Jobs that one can have as set medics include: a key medic, who is the first medical provider hired for a film production and works as the first aid department head. Often hired by one of the film’s producers, the key medic is the person who is ultimately responsible for staffing the medical department with the right crew for the job. The off-production medic is one who is responsible for watching over the various laborers, carpenters, and set designers.
