In preparation for first blossom, New Mexico fruit growers will meet at the annual fruit growers workshop, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, March 12, at the Santa Fe County fairground building, 3229 Rodeo Road in Santa Fe.

The annual event is hosted by New Mexico State University’s Cooperative Extension Service in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences.

“This workshop will cover a wide range of topics that should help growers prepare for the upcoming season,” said Shengrui Yao, NMSU Extension fruit specialist.

New this year will be presentations on backyard grapes, cider apple cultivars and making hard cider, and berry production.

Presentation on general orchard management includes integrated pest management for fruit crops; home orchard management; and cover crops, soil health and soil fertility management.

There also will be a presentation on farm land leasing structures and fruit marketing strategies.

Registration fees are $15 prior to March 6, and $20 after March 6 and at the door, which cover the cost of lunch and materials. Payment is cash or check only. To make sure there is enough food for everyone, an accurate head count is needed.
