Auditor Colón announces audit of state agency parking lots and structures to test for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act on the 30th Anniversary

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Auditor Colón, through the Office of the State Auditor (OSA), announced a Special Audit to test for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in parking lots at governmental buildings in New Mexico. The OSA’s scope of work will evaluate and review around 60 state agencies for parking lot compliance with ADA guidelines. Testing will primarily include Central New Mexico, however, some rural areas may also be included.

“Having grown up with a father who had Muscular Dystrophy and passed away at the age of 49, the importance of the ADA is personal to me,” said Auditor Colón.

“The ADA was passed the year my father died, and I want to make sure elected officials and state agencies are holding ourselves to the highest standard when it comes to compliance with the ADA.” Auditor Colón went on to say, “Regardless of politics, nobody should be treated differently or unfairly because they live with a disability.”

“We must protect one of New Mexico’s most vulnerable populations and provide proper accommodations consistent with ADA guidelines to help ensure access to government for all constituents,” said Auditor Colón. New Mexicans concerned about potential instances of waste, fraud, and abuse should contact the Office of the State auditor.
