 ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Auditor Colón is once again urging New Mexicans to be aware of fraudsters exploiting the COVID-19 pandemic. The Office of the State Auditor (OSA) together with the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions (DWS) issued a joint risk advisoryproviding guidance, for individuals and employers, on action they can take to protect themselves from being a victim of identity theft related to fraudulent unemployment insurance claims. 

“A fraudster’s worst enemy is a prepared and knowledgeable community.” said Auditor Colón. “Individuals do not need to be unemployed to be a victim of unemployment insurance fraud. Employers can have a full staff and fall victim to false claims. Once your identity is compromised resolution takes time. By investing a few minutes to educate yourself now you will save a lot of aggravation down the road should you become a victim. We have provided actionable steps New Mexicans can take to protect themselves. Be proactive and protect yourself.”
