In consultation with Central Consolidated School District, the July LESC meeting is being rescheduled out of respect for the Navajo Nation Department of Health's public health order, which prohibits gatherings of more than 25 people, and growing concern that the new Delta variant poses for Shiprock and the surrounding area. The public health order – issued by a sovereign nation – notes that failure to comply with the limitations imposed by the order constitutes an “imminent threat and menace to public health.” Despite strong vaccination rates on the Navajo Nation, the daily rate of infection has tripled over the last week, making caution imperative in a community that was hard hit by the first round of Covid-19. The committee and school district look forward to continued government-to-government relations and collaboration with the Navajo Nation Department of Health to reschedule the hearing in October or at a time that is determined to pose no significant health risk.
