NMSU University Art Museum director Marisa Sage will spend an evening with artist Karen Yank and Tonya Turner Carroll, co-owner of Santa Fe’s Turner Carroll Gallery on Thursday, Aug. 31.


 
Sage, Yank and Turner Carroll will explore the themes of the UAM’s current exhibition “Agnes Martin and Karen Yank: Meditations on Mentor and Student,” on display in the Bunny Conlon Modern and Contemporary Art Gallery. They will discuss the practices Yank learned during her mentorship with the renowned artist Agnes Martin and how that relationship influenced her career.

 
“A Conversation with Karen Yank, Tonya Turner Carroll, and Marisa Sage” will be hosted from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, August 31 in room 106 in the University Art Museum inside Devasthali Hall, 1308 E. University Ave. Attending the panel discussion is free and open to the public. The panel discussion will be streamed live through Instagram and can be viewed immediately afterwards on the UAM account, @nmsuartmuseum.


 
“Meditations on Mentor and Student” is an exhibition exploring the work and intersecting lives of artists Martin and Yank. Featured in this exhibition are Martin’s lithographs on vellum, whose complex and meditative grids are indicative of the renowned artist’s style which impacted upon abstract expressionism, minimalism and transcendentalism. Yank’s steel wall-based sculptures reference nature and convey abstract emotional content in minimalist/maximalist forms.
 


Yank met Martin in 1987 at Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture, an artist residency in Maine. The two had a passion for New Mexico and both chose the high desert to live out their lives and artistic practices. For nearly 17 years, Yank and Martin met weekly as a friendship and mentorship flourished.


 
Yank received her MFA from Rutgers University and her BFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her sculptures are included in numerous museum and public collections, including the New Mexico Museum of Art, New Mexico State Capitol Art Collection, Albuquerque Museum and the Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet in New York City. She has completed more than 50 public and private outdoor commissions across the U.S. and has been chosen for the Sunport Boulevard extension project in Albuquerque. Yank was a 2022 Governor's Awards for Excellence in the Arts recipient.


 
Turner Carroll graduated with honors from the art history department at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She was awarded the prestigious Morehead-Cain Scholarship for her studies in the history of art at UNC. Along with her husband, Carroll is the co-founder of the Turner Carroll Gallery in 1991. She previously worked at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Israel Museum and Sotheby’s London and studied Italian art and language at Stanford’s Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome. Turner Carroll received the Raoul Wallenberg Scholarship to study at Hebrew University in Jerusalem where she focused her research on Ancient Near Eastern art, art as propaganda and art for social change.


 
Sage is the director and head curator of the UAM with a passion for emerging contemporary art and artists. Throughout her 15-year career, Sage has planned and executed more than 100 international exhibitions, which includes more than 200 individual artists globally. Previously, she served as the director of the Rema Hort Mann Foundation, in New York City and galleries manager for Salisbury University Art Galleries, in Salisbury, Maryland. Before that, she established Like the Spice Gallery, a contemporary art gallery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn in New York City which held over 65 exhibitions between 2006 and 2012.
