As part of the Nelson-Boswell Reading Series, La Sociedad para Las Artes the Department of Art are co-hosting a public reading event for poet Anthony Sutton.

Sutton, Inprint C. Glenn Cambor fellow in the University of Houston Literature and Creative Writing Ph. D. program, is the author of “Particles of a Stranger Light” published by Veliz Books in 2023. He will read from his work at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23 at New Mexico State University in the Creative Media Institute Theater in Milton Hall, Room 171.

Master of Fine Arts candidate in fiction, Kathy Key-Tello, also will be reading from thesis works. The event is free and open to the public and includes a reception following the reading.

Sutton’s poetry has appeared in Grist, guesthouse, Gulf Coast, The Journal, Prairie Schooner, Puerto del Sol, Zone 3 and the forthcoming anthology “In the Tempered Dark: Contemporary Poets Transcending Elegy” to be published with Black Lawrence Press later this year. He also teaches at Grackle and Grackle, a writing organization in Houston, Texas.

“All I know is that I want to keep reading and rereading these lovely, strange, wise and wise-cracking selves that Sutton invents for himself in “Particles of a Stranger Light,” said Donald Platt, poet and English professor at Purdue University. “This virtuoso book passes like a category five hurricane through our consciousness and, if you let it, will rearrange who you are.”

The Nelson-Boswell Reading Series invites visiting writers to NMSU to share their work with the community. Copies of Sutton’s books also will be available for sale.

Next in the series, Diné writer and filmmaker Ramona Emerson, author of “Shuttle,” will be on campus for a reading on Friday, April 12.
