Joe George rsJoe Stuart George, beloved husband and father, went to live with his Heavenly Father September 12, 2016 after an extended illness.

Joe was born November 24, 1940 to Sy O. George and Helen (Norcross) George in Miami, AZ.

His family moved to south Phoenix when Joe was approximately six years of age and he later graduated from South Mountain High School in 1959. He attended college in Idaho and in Flagstaff, AZ.

Joe was hired as a surveyor with the Arizona Highway Department, surveying the road from Apache, AZ to Silver Creek at nearby Douglas.

Later he hired on with Phelps Dodge Copper Corporation, being trained in the Power Plant at the Douglas Smelter. When PD opened its new smelter in Playas, NM in 1975, Joe relocated his family. He gave over 30 years of service to the company as a shift foreman overseeing not only the power plant, but also the water treatment plant and the oxygen production plant.

When Phelps Dodge shut down the Playas Smelter in 1999, Joe returned to live at the home he had north of Lordsburg in the Gold Hill area.

Joe was an accomplished square dancer and a charter member of the Playas Kopper Kapers and the White Signal 49ers square dance clubs.

He enjoyed bowling for many years and was an active member of the Lordsburg Elks Lodge #1813 for 12 years. Joe served on the Board of Directors and managed the Elks Bingo on Thursday evenings until his illness forced him to take life a bit easier.

Joe was a member of the LDS Lordsburg Ward and knew and loved his Heavenly Father.

He is survived by his wife, Annette, of 31 years and several children, which include daughter Tina Alley of Phoenix, AZ and grandchildren Erin and Nickolas Alley; daughter Lisa Adams and granddaughter Katelin Burke of Kansas City, KS; son William Joseph George and his wife Catherine Ann and grandsons Tyler, Joseph and Lucas, all of Williamsport, MD. He also raised Annette's children, Jeremy, wife Suzanne and grandson Thomas, all of Tucson, AZ; and Rhonda Edwards, husband Jason and grandchildren Jayross, Jaycee and Stoney of Capitan, NM. Joe also is survived by his sister, Carol Horvath of Olympia, WA, and nephews Steven, Scott and Keith and families.

The members of the Lordsburg LDS Ward and Elks Lodge #1813 were his "extended" family of beloved friends.

Services will be held at the LDS Church on Friday September 16, 2016 at 10 o'clock in the morning. Interment will follow at Mt. View Cemetery.
