winifred sternWinnifred (Winnie) Nadine Stern, wife of William Bernard Stern passed on Friday, 2/21/2020 at the Northrise Assisted Living facility in Las Cruces, New Mexico at 97 years old.

She had an active and vibrant life; born in California, moved with her parents to Albuquerque, NM  and then subsequently to Las Cruces where she graduated from high school and began attending New Mexico State University. She married Ted Freed and had two sons, Michael and Ted. She subsequently married William Bernard Stern and raised six children; Michael and Ted, who Bernie immediately adopted and then came Renee, Barney, and the twins Doug and Don. Bernie passed in 1997.

In 1957 Winnie and Bernie moved to Silver City where Bernie took over operation of the Union Furniture Company and made a successful business of it over the next 35 years. Winnie immediately fell in love with Silver City; the moderate climate, the mountains and the welcoming community.  If you knew Winnie, you were her friend; and she had many in Silver on her golf club, Women’s Club, through her painting hobby and other adventures. She had taken a painting course at Western and was accused after the final exam of getting assistance on her final painting because it was so well done. Mom quit the class at that point due to this false accusation and continued to paint on her own showing much artistic skill.

Winnie was so proud of all her children who she loved so dearly and you would know that within the first minute of any conversation with her. With 19 grandchildren we’ve lost count of the great grandchildren.  Winnie’s love legacy will be carried on through her family.
