Don was born in Brookfield, Missouri to Donald Pointer Sr. and his wife Marie. He went to elementary and high school in New Mexico. After graduating he, served his country in the Army Reserves before continuing his education at California State University Hayward and University of California, Berkeley obtaining his Ph.D. in cellular biology. After which he attended Miami School of Medicine to become a physician specializing in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He did his residency and setup his practices in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he brought many lives into the world. 

After a wonderful and successful career in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he met and later married Julie Haynes Pointer, they moved to Buckhorn, New Mexico. Don lived out the remainder of his life happily exploring the wonder of the area. He loved guitars and over the years learned to make them for himself and others. He found joy throughout his life with his adventures in building and flying his gyroplane. He passed away at home with his family with him.

Don is preceded in death by his daughter, Susan Pointer, his parents, and his brother Craig Pointer. He is survived by his wife, Julie, step daughter Amanda Haynes, sisters Donna Briskie and Patricia Gessner, and brother Darrell Pointer.
