Jackie “Jack” Ray Fortenberry, 67, Deming resident passed away Friday, September 29, 2023 in Las Cruces.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, October 11, 2023 at 11 o’clock in the morning at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Military Honors will be rendered by the United States Army. Cremation has been entrusted to Baca’s Mimbres Crematory.

Jack as he was fondly known as was born December 5, 1955 in Portland, OR to Hershel Lee and Jessie (Sparks) Fortenberry. The same day he graduated from high school, he was sent off and enlisted into the United States Army. Jack was very proud of his service to his country, even though he was never sent over seas he was standing by and always ready to go wherever it was he needed to serve. After his time in the service Jack returned home and began working. He held many jobs and was a very hard worker and a jack of all trades. He worked as hard as he could till, he could not no more. Jack loved being outdoors more than anything, from hikes in the mountains to listening to the soft flow of water from the lakes and rivers. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. A true outdoors man. Jack touched many lives through out his life and will be missed by many. May he rest in peace.

He is survived by his children Timothy Lee Fortenberry and Christina Sueann Johnson; 2 siblings Joe Dean (Cathleen) Fortenberry and Jessie Keith; 5 grandchildren, 10 adopted grandchildren and 5 adopted great-grandchildren all of whom he loved very much.

Jack is preceded in death by his parents Hershel and Jessie Fortenberry and a brother Richard Jay Fortenberry.
