HiltsleyJJames Hiltsley, 80, a resident of Silver City, NM entered eternal rest on Christmas morning, Monday, December 25, 2023 at his residence.  Jim (Sarge) was born to his parents, Arthur and Marion (Mahar) Hiltsley near Schenectady, New York in 1943. In the early 1950's, his family re-located to Albuquerque NM where he discovered his passion of cowboying. He graduated Highland High School in 1961 and went on to play football at UTEP where he was later drafted to play for the Dallas Cowboys. He declined the offered and joined the U.S. NAVY instead. He proudly served 4 years during the Vietnam war and was honorably discharged.  He rode the rodeo circuit for a few years, riding bareback broncos.  In the mid 1970's he joined the NM State Police where he served for 25 years, eventually retiring in Silver City as a Sergeant in the mid 1990's.

During his early years in the State Police, he met the love of his life and married Cheryl. They lovingly raised their daughter Tracey who later went on the be a highly successful medical professional and veteran.

After his retirement, Sarge engaged in many hobbies. He was an avid big game hunter taking many trips to Africa where he acquired multiple trophies.  His hunting passion bloomed into a prosperous career in taxidermy. He was a highly skilled artist who took extreme pride in his work.  During that time, Jim became a very proud grandfather to Hannah who absolutely adored him. With his guidance and character example she went on to become a Neurophysiologist and creative individual.

Jim was highly impactful on the lives of others by being an incredible father, husband, friend, mentor, and leader. He will be truly missed by all who knew him.

The family will be having a private Memorial to celebrate Jim’s life.
