I joke a lot about food, and where I like to eat. This past Sunday I made the drive to Santa Fe to attend legislative hearings on Monday morning. When I arrived in Santa Fe. I didn't immediately go to the hotel and check-in. Nope, I visited the Church's Chicken in Santa Fe and had my Sunday night dinner all hot and ready in a bag when I finally made it to my room. I know, it sounds crazy. A person drives all the way to Santa Fe and passes lots and lots of excellent restaurants with great meals... and ends up getting a 3-piece combo with fried okra at Church's. Some folks would say I'm cheap, others would say I simply have very little taste for fine dining. Hey guys... I have a great taste for barnyard bird deep-fried in what turns out to be golden batter with just the right seasonings to make me want more. And I almost forgot, I had more fried chicken on my trip home. I sure like the food on those trips to Santa Fe.

As I write this article, I have not read the Monday edition of the Daily Press. I have been told there is an article that mentions one of the hearings I attended, the hearing in regards to transferring Fort Bayard from the State of New Mexico to the Village of Santa Clara. Although the bill was forwarded with the "Pass with no recommendation" status... it still passed. I think many people thought this bill would be dead at the first hearing it received. It was good to hear the various Senators comment on what their thoughts were for Fort Bayard, and how they were somewhat enthused that a group such as the Village of Santa Clara was being proactive to try to do something to save not only the buildings, but also the heritage of Fort Bayard. Many thanks to Senator Howie Morales for introducing the bill, and many thank-yous go to Mayor Bauch and the leadership in Santa Clara for having the vision to try to develop this local historical area. We are very proud of the various organizations, businesses and individuals who have written support letters in favor of this bill. I am pretty certain that in coming weeks we will announce some ways everyone can pitch in to help save some of the buildings at Fort Bayard. We hope you will join with us in our efforts.
