Have you really looked around lately? Sunday afternoon, during a drive between Deming and Silver City, everything was so wonderful looking. It’s green everywhere you look. Heck, even the Mimbres River had lots of water running in it, when just a few weeks ago it was as dry as a bone in the desert. Then this Tuesday morning, I was topping the hill in front of Walmart looking to the west. And wow, the mountains are so beautiful when they are a luscious green.

So, what made the difference? Well, have you ever seen the movie starring Burt Lancaster titled “The Rainmaker.” Burt Lancaster’s character, Bill Starbuck, is paid $100 to make it rain. They are pounding on a drum and doing lots of other stuff that any sensible person would know isn’t going to cause it to rain. Yet, in the end… it rains. Now we may not have anyone beating drums or doing other crazy things to make it rain. But we do have Mr. Steve Maxwell. And he can make it rain. Every time he comes to Silver City and puts his area rugs out for sale along Highway 180… it rains. So, “Thank You,” Mr. Maxwell. We appreciate your bringing the rains to Grant County.

Like many other people, I am always amazed by the fact that there are so many businesses in our area that are not listed in any of the telephone books. Even more amazing is the fact that those same businesses are not listed anywhere on the internet. Well, we have a gentleman that recently moved to Silver City that is trying to remedy this. Jim Kimmons has created a website, https://enjoysilvercity.com and he is willing to place your business on it at no cost. When you go to his website, look toward the top on the right-hand side of the home page and you’ll see the words… “Businesses Get Your Free Listing” in a red font. Share some information about your business, and Jim does the rest. He can even stop by and take a picture or shoot a short video clip to place with your information. AND, it is free. In August, the Silver City Grant County Chamber of Commerce will host Jim Kimmons to teach people how to build a free website using WordPress. Literally, you will learn to build and maintain a website with only a minimum payment to buy the domain name for your own site. “Thank You, Mr. Kimmons” for falling in love with Silver City and Grant County… and for working with local businesses to help market their services.

As I am writing this article, I just took the eighth phone call of the day for PNM. Though I know this will not help, if you need to call PNM to get electric service, pay your electric bill by phone, report an outage, or you simply want to file a complaint… the correct phone number is 888-342-5766 (that’s 888-DialPNM). If you call this number and get a recording, stay on the line. I give you this solemn promise, hanging up and calling the Chamber of Commerce a second or third time will not help you get electric service any quicker. So, “Thank You,” Google, for publishing the incorrect phone number allowing us to speak with so many people dialing the wrong number.

I know there are readers that get annoyed reading about the new restaurant coming to town, so I have to say the word at least once in my article… “Opening Soon – Denny’s.”

If you need a space for a wedding reception, a birthday party, a training workshop, a conference meeting, a Christmas party, a banquet, a fundraiser, an outdoor car sales event, a campaign rally, or a public forum… the Grant County Veterans Business & Conference Center located at 3031 Highway 180 East in Silver City can probably meet your needs. Call us or stop by to check out the rentable spaces and check for availability. Of course, you can call our phone number… 575-538-3785. Weekends between now and Christmas are filling up fast.

By the way, if you would like to thank Mr. Maxwell or ask him a question about area rugs, his number is 575-590-0734.
