Last week I wrote about planning to take my family to Tombstone. I had a couple of people complain to me that I shouldn’t write about going out of town, but I should write about places to take my sons around the Grant County area. However, last Saturday we stopped at a Snappy Mart on Hudson Street to purchase enough gas to get to Lordsburg. While pumping a few gallons, a gentleman getting gas on the other pump asked me if we were on our way to Tombstone. Of course, I said yes. Turns out he reads the column each week and had read that we were going to make the day trip.

Each week I get stopped by nice folks at the Post Office, in a restaurant, or in a store… and they talk about something I have written. Some folks agree with my writings, and some folks don’t. However, I always appreciate the comments. And I appreciate the suggestions that some folks give me about future writings.

By the way, the trip to Tombstone was fantastic. The weather was great and each of us enjoyed the gun fight, the food, and the trip through wild west history.

Now let’s talk about home. Right here in Grant County there are a few events the Silver City Grant County Chamber of Commerce will help with. Tomorrow – Thursday, we will assist Western New Mexico University with a ribbon cutting at the newly remodeled Cornali Dog Park located at 1207 North Virginia Street in Silver City. The park has new fences and new signs. An area within the park has been built for smaller dogs to run and play without fear of large dogs. And of course, this means the large dogs have an area they can run around in without tripping over the small dogs. Well, that may not be the reason for the separation, but it sounds good. Anyway, the ribbon cutting event will begin at 11:00 a.m., and the public (and their dogs) are invited.

On Friday – November 10, the Chamber of Commerce will be present at Cactus Jack's to help with a ribbon cutting celebrating their official Grand Opening Weekend. Cactus Jack’s is a gluten-free grocery store as well as a healthy-eating eatery. The store is located at 1307 North Pope Street in Silver City. The ribbon cutting will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday. However, the grand opening will run all weekend. There will be free samples of their foods and drinks. They will have prizes and other grand opening giveaways. Saturday the Silver High Color Guard will be on-hand and free live musical entertainment by Hound Dog will be enjoyed by everyone coming to the store. Cactus Jack’s will also roll-out a new Customer Loyalty Program this weekend as part of the grand opening. We hope you will attend the ribbon cutting and grand opening celebration at Cactus Jack’s.

Don’t forget, nominations for Grant County Citizen of the Year, Linda K. Jones Humanitarian of the Year, Grant County Volunteer of the Year, and the two Grant County Business of the Year awards must be in by November 10. The banquet is Friday – November 17. WNMU’s Dr. Joseph Shepard will be our featured speaker. Along with the PNM Energy Efficiency Awards and the Chamber’s Grant County Awards… it should be a fantastic evening. Tickets are on sale at the Chamber of Commerce office or call the office at 538-3785 to learn how you can purchase tickets online.

If you have questions, if you need information, if you know someone who needs a relocation or tourism packet, contact our office. Also, the Grant County Conference Center is a great place to have parties, training workshops, conferences, meetings and even weddings. It is a great facility and the cost is surprisingly cheap for all the amenities that come with renting space. If you have not visited the Conference Center since our remodel, stop by for a tour. We love showing off this great building. The Conference Center and the Chamber of Commerce office is located at 3031 Highway 180 East in Silver City. Hope to see you soon.
