Grant County Commissioner Alicia Edwards and US Navy Seal veteran, Brett Myrick will present a conversation about water protection, addressing the movement the Standing Rock Tribes and their supporters have organized to stop the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline. Both Edwards and Myrick, local veterans, went to Standing Rock to support the Standing Rock Tribes in the fundamental principal that sovereign governments have the right to protect their resources, treaty rights, and waterways.
Edwards provided her organizational skills in bringing people together and Myrick joined veterans lining up to protect protestors from violence. They will talk about how the Water Protectors movement that sought to halt the Dakota Access Pipeline and our local Gila River protectors are similar. Local governments, environmental teachers and students are examining the impacts of water usage on the interdependent web of life. They are working to build a community, which can take action for social justice, the environment and the planet.
The program will also include Inspirational music by folk musician Scott Van Linge who provides a catalyst for us to think deeply about our future and the future of life on the planet. There will be coffee and conversation after the service, and visitors are welcome.
