Girl Scout Little House receiving much needed repairs and renovations

Girl Scouts of the Desert Southwest was recently awarded $40,000.00 from Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc. Foundation's Community Investment Fund.

Contractors have started the renovation on the building as was asked for in the grant. Already installed is a new furnace, in addition to an air-conditioning unit. In the picture is the trim being installed by MasterCraft Metals Inc. of Silver City.

Other things to be done to the building are installing a new hot water heater, bathroom stalls, sink and toilets, replacing some windows, new flooring throughout and a new front door.

Girl Scouts has been part of this community since the early 1920s with a troop meeting at the Elementary Training School of the New Mexico State Teachers College. The building known as "Girl Scout Little House" has been at its current location since 1946. It had been a CCC building and was renovated to its present configuration.

Currently Girl Scouts in Grant County serves 12 percent of all girls in the area. Character, conduct, and community service are core qualities of Girls Scouting. Girl Scouting is an asset to the Community. Through leadership and service, its members enrich the lives around them.
