This is the last DAILY update for the RICO FIRE
SILVER CITY, NM, June 28, 2023 – This is the last daily update for the Rico Fire. Following the standard naming convention for wildfires, the “Rico Fire” was named after a nearby geographical feature, Arroyo Rico. Today is considered a transition day, as the Albuquerque Zone Incident Management Team transfers command of the fire to Incident Commander, Jesse Holguin from the BLM. Holguin will oversee a less complex incident with the appropriate number and type of resources to complete the work that remains.

[Editor's Note: This is the fourth, and, so far, final of several in a series of articles about and by students who participated from Silver Consolidated Schools in the National History Day competitions, under the tutelage of teachers Claudie Thompson and Lee Wilson. This editor posed the questions, and the students replied. If more comments come in from participants, they will also be featured.]
Elizabeth McDonald, Isaac Beck, and Kylee Jones placed fifth in National History Day competition at nationals
Joshua Beck placed tenth in NHD nationalsThe students succeeded at the state level, allowing them to go to Nationals in Washington D.C.
This article features the comments from the two of the fifth place participants—a group project. It also recognizes the individual project that placed tenth at Nationals.
Elizabeth McDonald, Isaac Beck, and Kylee Jones placed fifth in the nation and won the prestigious special award for U.S. Marine Corps History with their outstanding documentary, "Under Fire: Frontiers on the Front Lines" about female war correspondent Dickey Chapelle. The judges complimented the students' exemplary research and depth of knowledge.
Joshua Beck placed tenth in the nation with his individual documentary on the technical innovations Walt Disney used in creating Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Again, the judges were impressed with his depth of knowledge, and Joshua received the Outstanding Senior Award for the state of New Mexico.
Man found deceased in Turkey Creek area

John Calvin Richardson, 46, found deceased in the area of Turkey Creek in Gila New Mexico. On June 26, 2023 at approximately 3:27 a.m. The Grant County Sheriff's Deputies responded to an unattended death in the area of Turkey Creek. Victim had been with a friend camping near a hot spring. While both were in the water, the camp fire they had going was going out.
The friend went to go retrieve some more fire wood and when she returned, victim was lying face down in the water. EMS and Paramedics were called out to the scene for medical attention but were unsuccessful. The Grant County Sheriff's Detectives were called out as this is still an ongoing investigation and awaiting results from the Office of Medical Investigator for the cause of death. Next of kin was notified.
Sheriff Raul Villanueva and his staff wish to offer condolences to the family and friends of the decedent at this most difficult time.

The Pass Fire grew an additional 1271 acres yesterday where the fire is most active on the southeast side near Trails End Ranch and the East Fork of the Gila River. The fire is gradually progressing towards the east and southeast and fire crews are successfully holding the fire within containment lines.
Today, firefighters are implementing a plan to improve FR704 and assess and prep White Rocks Trail (27) and Iron Trail (771) to be utilized as part of the containment line and prevent the fire from advancing towards private land. As part of the strategy to ensure the protection of private land and structures, firefighters will carefully evaluate and implement hand ignition operations to herd the fire away from private property.

The LAST FIRE UPDATE for the RICO FIRE will be issued tomorrow, June 28
SILVER CITY, NM, June 27, 2023 – Firefighters using hand-held GPS units were able to walk and map the entire perimeter of the Rico Fire, resulting in a more accurate measurement of the acreage. Containment is at 70%, and suppression repair work continues. The workforce has decreased slightly and is sufficient based on the current workload. Work that is now underway involves repairing hand and dozer lines, trails, staging areas, safety zones, drop points, and possibly roads that were used during the firefighting effort. Visibility of the handline constructed during the fire will be reduced and brush and limbs may be scattered onto firelines so that a more natural appearance is restored. Waterbars are being installed to facilitate drainage, especially on sloped terrain and handline intersections with roads and trails.
