Saturday April 22, 2023, celebrated the 53-year tradition of the holiday. It took place at Gough Park and this year was celebrated with the Continental Divide Trail Days.
The event listed 64 different organizations participating. They ranged from Advocates for Snake Preservation to WNMU (Western New Mexico University) Outdoors program. They also had several organizations and outdoor gear sales from out of the area. Several local musicians also performed throughout the day.

Fatal Crash in Grant County, NM

Grant County, NM – On April 23, 2023, at around 1:20 p.m., the New Mexico State Police investigated a fatal crash involving a single vehicle on White Water Road off State Road 90 south of Silver City, NM
The initial investigation indicated that a 2004 Buick, driven by Tyler Trusty (35) of Caballo, NM was traveling eastbound on White Water Road. For reasons still under investigation, Mr. Trusty left the roadway and struck a dirt embankment, causing the vehicle to roll over. Mr. Trusty sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on the scene by the Office of the Medical Examiner.

At the Grant County Commission regular meeting on April 13, 2023, Gila Regional Medical Center Interim Chief Executive Officer Margie Molitar came forward to give the monthly report and turned it over to Chief Financial Officer Patrick Banks, who presented the February financial report, as the March one had not been yet approved by the Governing Board.
Banks noted the days cash on hand were up from the previous month at 109 days. "We are improving our cost structure. We have had a significant increase in labor costs, but we expect to see an improvement. The hospital posted a $30,000 surplus in operations, which is highly significant. The hospital is grateful to Sen. Siah Hemphill, Rep. Luis Terrazas, our federal congressional delegation, and you commissioners for your support to make sure to keep the hospital going."

The National History Day coaches for the Silver Consolidated Schools are Claudie Thompson and Lee Wilson. The theme this year was Frontiers in History: People, Places, Ideas.
Below is the list of the awardees. Only 1st and 2nd place go to the National Competition, but included are the 3rd place projects as well since they received a medal. Also included are the special awards.
The topics of each person's and group's award, 1st and 2nd places that will allow them to go on to nationals, is in parentheses after the medalists’ name(s).

Warm and drier air moves back to southern New Mexico and far west Texas bringing elevated to critical fire weather conditions on Tuesday. Wind speeds will go up on Tuesday afternoon with the development of a surface low in northeastern New Mexico. Winds will be from the west around 20-25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. Minimum relative humidity will remain in the 5-15 percent range for the lowlands, while the mountains remain around 15 to 25%.

Western New Mexico University held the 56th running of The Great Race on Saturday, April 22, 2023. The race began with bored students 56 years ago taking their beds out of their dorm rooms and pushing them around the campus. It became a tradition. Teams now use push carts. The race pits alumni and student teams against one another. See who won this year's race by viewing the photo essay below:
