Learning throughout one’s career is important. It is important for the individual employee to better understand new processes and methods for his/her job. Continuing education is also critically important for the company you work for.
This week the Silver City Grant County Chamber of Commerce invited other chambers from around the state to come to Silver City for a New Mexico Chamber Executives Conference. This conference is all about professional development to help chamber leaders go back to their cities and help the chamber members and their communities develop, implement and attain goals.
To learn more about the chamber of commerce industry, we invited Cathi Hight from Austin, Texas. Cathi is a premier trainer regarding membership development, growth and retention. To learn more about education in New Mexico, we invited New Mexico Public Education Secretary – Christopher Ruszkowski to talk about future plans of the State’s Education Department. To help our chamber executives with fundraising and growing membership development, we invited Ulrich Henzler – CEO of Novoprint USA and Todd Penske – CEO & founder of GrouVe to discuss their businesses and philosophy with our chamber leaders. Liquor and beer licensing is an issue in every community in New Mexico. So, we invited NM Representative Rebecca Dow to speak about some of the work that will be presented to the state legislature in 2019 regarding the licensing laws. In November, General Obligation Bonds for higher education will be on the ballot, so we have invited WNMU President Dr. Joseph Shepard to explain what these bonds mean to colleges and universities across this state. And because we understand the importance of collaborations, we have invited Silver Schools Associate Superintendent Curtis Clough to speak about “Collective Impact: Community-Business Partnership for Workforce Development." And of course, we are going to showcase our major employer in the area by taking a tour of one of Freeport McMoRan’s local mines.
This conference not only serves as great continuing education, it also serves as a great example of how we hope to see the Grant County Conference Center used more and more. We bring people in from other areas for a couple of days. They rent rooms. They eat food. That may make local purchases. Frankly, they spend some of their money and then return home. In the coming weeks we have appointments with two other state-wide organizations considering Silver City as the site for their future state conventions. We are keeping our fingers crossed.
Speaking of members, we want to welcome Light Art Space as our newest Chamber of Commerce member. Light Art Space is a place for creative discovery featuring art exhibits, workshops, lectures, and other events. Light Art Space is located at 209 West Broadway in downtown Silver City, New Mexico. Everyone is invited to attend their ribbon cutting and opening reception on Saturday – September 1. The ribbon cutting will be held at 4:00 p.m. and the opening reception will run from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. For more information, contact Light Art Space director, Karen Hymer at info@lightartspace.com.
Whether industry professional gather to learn more about their jobs at state-wide conferences or maybe it is local artists and students who attend classes and workshops at Light Art Space… professional education/continual learning is truly important.
