Literacy Link-Leamos gives away books to elementary students Dec. 2015

Let's Read project of Literacy Link-Leamos gives thousands of new books three times a year to the elementary children in the Silver and Cobre schools. These books are free from First Book National Book Bank, a non-profit organization that collects donated new books from publishers. LLL and the thousands of other recipient organizations, must pay postage, from $0.55 to $0.75 for each book. LLL is grateful to the Rotary Club of Silver City and to Freeport-McMoRan Foundation for supporting this book distribution project.

During the weeks of Dec. 7-18, 2015, LL-L volunteers have distributed and will distribute books to nine elementary schools, giving away close to 8,500 books. A similar distribution was in September/October. Another will happen in the spring, 2016.

This past week, books had already been given to Cliff and San Lorenzo schools, and on Thursday and Friday, students at Central Elementary and Hurley Elementary received books.

Next week, Monday through Friday, students will receive books at Stout Elementary, José Barrios Elementary, Sixth Street Elementary and Harrison Schmitt Elementary. 

Twenty-three volunteers have made and are making these donations possible, according to LL-L founder and main organizer of the group, Caroline Baldwin.

In response to many book grant applications since October 2001, LL-L has been granted 198,625 new books from First Book. On receipt, all these books are labeled to identify LL-L with the group's telephone number and offer of tutoring.
