Whitewater Creek Trail gets a facelift

Conservation Corps New Mexico joins Gila National Forest trail crews in heroic effort

GLENWOOD, NM, July 7, 2023 – Whitewater Creek Trail #207 has been largely impassable since it was severely damaged by post-fire flooding after the 2012 Whitewater Baldy Fire. Now that the watershed has mostly stabilized, an emphasis is being made on reinforcing and rebuilding the trail foundation to restore reasonable public access through Whitewater Canyon. 

The project is made possible by a partnership between the Gila National Forest and Conservation Corps New Mexico (CCNM). A combination of CCNM and Forest Service trail crews have been working the past several weeks and making impressive progress.

“I couldn’t be more pleased with the results of this team’s efforts,” said Acting Glenwood District Ranger Brian Stultz. “They are coordinating their work and sharing knowledge, moving and placing literally tons of rock, and facilitating public access for a wider audience of visitors to this popular destination.”

The crews are using highline rigging to move tons of rock that is being used to reestablish trail tread outside of the creek and along its banks. The crews have removed a hazardous damaged staircase and metal railings, and restored trail tread through rock fall areas. They used rebar to reinforce and armor a wooden staircase that had been undercut by creek flows, constructing gabion walls and placing large river rock to replace and harden the eroded streambank. They also constructed 200 feet of sustainable trail to provide access to the swimming hole.

So far, it’s been a great start to the season, with additional trail sections planned over the rest of the summer. Next up, they have their sights set on the streambank below the “CCC steps”, where the crews will use their new skills to armor the streambank beneath the steps. Their work is improving trail sustainability and accessibility for all users.
