Downtown ❤️

We love this downtown testimonial from a recent visitor!

Vibrant, active town centers are vital to creating and maintaining a vibrant, active community. I visited Silver City toward the end of the covid lockdowns, and even under those circumstances the downtown district was an inviting place where we chose to spend quite a bit of time [and money].

The main reason I found the area inviting was in large part the physical environment itself. As someone who has lived in a series of historic preservation districts and old houses, it was really heartening to see a small town revitalize itself using the extant architecture, not tearing everything apart to manufacture interest and investment. A good coffee shop, an eccentric bookstore, and a nice bar with good food were the icing on the cake.

Silver City has successfully used the 'preservation by neglect' of the buildings as an asset to create someplace lively and engaging without being hyper-planned. Although, in terms of planning, I've never seen as coherent and well thought out a commercial signage guide as that on your website – it should be in every Urban Planning textbook.

With so many artsy tourist towns around the Southwest, what you have is something real and rare: a comfortable place for the community to gather, to work and shop, to just hang out. I’ll be back.
