Silver City-Grant County Chamber of Commerce names new director

Scott Terry returns to New Mexico, a state he fell in love with, to serve as the new Silver City-Grant County Chamber of Commerce director.

He comes to Silver City after nine years as chamber director in Ruston, La., and three years in Nebraska as chamber director. Before that, he and his family lived in Bloomfield, N.M., where he revived the defunct chamber.

"In Bloomfield, there was a hogan that had a chamber sign on it, but there was no chamber," Terry said. "Several of us, including the woman who continues to run it, got it going again. I also served on city council there. We fell in love with New Mexico. After nine years sweating in Louisiana, it made us want to come back to New Mexico. After a wonderful thunder and lightning storm last night, it was just beautiful this morning."


This being his first day on the job, he said he is starting to meet with chamber members and board members.

"I think Grant County is a diamond in the rough," Terry said. "I hope to help bring in more businesses, more retirees and more visitors. We need to be doing what we have to in order to bring in more people and more money."

He describes the job of chamber director as a "juggler. We are an information center. We help people find the resources and the people they need to talk to. We will do our best to accommodate everyone's needs."

Terry said he wants to make a move on updating the website, so it will have a new look and up-to-date information.

"I want to build better communications with the members," Terry said. "We plan to put out an electronic newsletter, a comprehensive calendar and we want to provide things our members want.

"Once I find out the board's goals, I will make them mine," he continued. "We must do the right thing to retain jobs. We want more people to come here, spend money, go home and then come back for another event. It's the purest form of economic development. I want to do whatever we can do to grow the prosperity of the county.

"That definitely includes the communities of Bayard, Hurley and Santa Clara," Terry emphasized. "I want to make sure to help communities other than just Silver City. It's part of my job."
