QUEMADO, NM; May 25, 2016 - For Immediate Release - The Spur Fire on the Quemado Ranger District, six miles northeast of Luna, is reported at 350 acres with around 80 personnel on the incident. The lightning-caused fire is being managed under a confine/contain strategy within a defined area north of Reserve.
The increase in acreage resulted from the actions fire crews took Tuesday night to ignite east of the fire along Road 49 when the weather was cooler and calmer. These measures were taken to prevent fire from spreading outside the established management area given the forecast for increased southwest winds. On Wednesday, crews worked to reinforce the northern boundary of the management area west to the 2006 Wilson Fire scar, continued to patrol firelines and examined the trail system surrounding the fire. Fire activity consisted of flame lengths from 12-18 inches burning in ponderosa pine, grass and forest litter.
The Gila/Las Cruces Type 3 Incident Management Team is assigned to manage the fire starting Thursday, May 26. The Incident Command Post (ICP) is located at the Luna Work Center.
Objectives that managers have outlined for this incident include: keeping fire within the defined management area while minimizing firefighter, aviation, and public exposure and protecting private property, range improvements, and heritage resources from fire damage.
