Express St. James Hotel of Cimarron
Walking into the Express St. James Hotel in Cimarron, New Mexico feels like you are stepping back in time mixed with a strange sensation of something you cannot quite explain. An odd mixture of western history intermingled with spirits - perhaps? Built between 1872 and 1880 by Henri Lambert, a trained French chef, the hotel was known for its elegance and its violence. Lambert furnished his hotel in style with chandeliers, fine art, beautiful furniture and small marble sinks in the rooms.

Purchased in 2009, by Robert A. Funk, owner of Express Personnel and the UU Bar Ranch, the hotel was remodeled to benefit the Village of Cimarron by providing employment for approximately 50 people. Now the historic hotel captures the spirit and elegance of the late 1800's while blending with the dining area, state of the art kitchen, patio and newer annex with modernized "motel" rooms. Throughout the lobby and halls are paintings, sculptures and antiques added by Mr. Funk to enhance the western feel. Fine food served in a relaxing atmosphere continues Henri's tradition into the 21st century. The carved wooden bar is still a gathering place but the gambling and guns are gone. The atmosphere is more peaceful but who knows what the night will bring?
