Silver City, NM - Dr. Suk-Jun Kim, a new sound professor of Interdisciplinary Expressive Arts (IDEA), will travel to Brussels, Belgium, to participate in L'Espace du son 2011, the 18th International Acousmatic Festival organized by Musiques et Recherches in Belgium.
Held for four days between Oct. 20 to 23, L'Espace du son has become a center that creates and distributes electro acoustic music in Europe by inviting key figures in the field to perform their music to an audience who attend from around the globe.
At the festival, Dr. Kim will offer two concerts to the international audience: the first, curated concert will introduce the audience to the musical world of young Korean composers, and the second concert is a carte blanche concert of Dr. Kim's compositions.
Dr. Kim teaches sound art courses for the IDEA program where students can learn various new media and technologies to explore new possibilities in sound making.
A Korean composer and sound artist, Dr. Kim's music focuses mainly on the sense of places that are fantastic, imaginary, magical, and realistic, where listeners can visit, stop by, and dwell on. His music has received a number of international awards.
Sound art courses currently, or soon to be offered, are designed to introduce students to the world of sound art. Students will get hands-on experiences on old and new technologies from traditional composition and commercial studio techniques such as recording technology and commercial software like Pro Tools and Digital Performer, to more advanced sound techniques that involve custom-made electronics, programming, 3D sound and other cutting-edge technologies.
Offering a comprehensive coursework with a wide range of performance, image and sound courses, the IDEA program aims to nurtures and challenge its students so that they will not only become versatile in new media technologies and well-prepared in the ever-evolving media job market, but also further their artistic career by developing artistic sensitivities to new media.
