On August 9, 2022, at about 9 p.m., Silver City Police Department officers observed a black 2000 GMC SUV in the 2300 block of Swan Street and attempted to make a traffic stop. The vehicle refused to pull over in response to the officer’s lights and instead initiated a chase through the neighborhood. SCPD continued to follow the vehicle as it drove erratically, at high rates of speed and without stopping at stop signs.

Central Dispatch alerted the officers to a call in the area regarding the SUV attempting to hit another vehicle at the intersection of 17th and Canal Streets. Officers remained in pursuit and identified the suspect as Martin Carrillo, 34, of New Mexico. The officers then witnessed Carrillo’s vehicle nearly strike a Toyota Tacoma near Durango Street. While officers continued the pursuit of Carrillo, the speed of the chase reached 75 miles per hour as the SUV continued northbound on Swan Street.

Near 23rd and Pope Street the officers exited their patrol car to pursue the vehicle on foot. As they followed the sounds of the SUV, which appeared stuck, there was not much light and Carrillo shouted to them that he had a weapon. Carrillo said he would use the weapon if law enforcement continued toward him. As officers got closer they saw Carrillo breaking windows to the vehicle and hiding his right hand, presumably keeping his firearm from view.

Officers continued to pursue Carrillo and heard sounds of a door being forced open and a female screaming as they were checking behind residences on 23rd Street. Officers confirmed that Carrillo unlawfully entered a residence in the 2300 block of Juniper Street and a perimeter was set around the residence. Carrillo was unwilling to leave the residence and the New Mexico State Police was contacted.

While waiting for the NMSP Tactical Team, officers again attempted to convince Carrillo to leave the residence. He responded and exited the residence, into police custody.

SCPD verified that Carrillo had an active Parole Violation for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon in the state of Nevada.

The residents of the house said Carrillo forced their door open and informed them that he was in possession of a firearm. He then told them to wait in a bedroom. Carrillo did not attempt to harm the residents while he was in contact with the SCPD.

After medical clearance at GRMC, Carrillo was transported to the Grant County Detention Center for booking. The charges against him include aggravated burglary, four counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer, aggravated fleeing of a law enforcement officer, two counts of false imprisonment, and three counts of breaking and entering and aggravated assault. Carrillo was also booked on his Parole warrant out of Nevada.

According to GCDC staff, Carrillo remains in custody there on a no bond hold.
