Sunny Yates KellermanSilver City, NM – According to the National Center for Charitable Statistics, giving by individuals makes up the vast majority of contributions received by nonprofits. Giving USA 2015 estimates that individual donations totaled more than $258 billion in 2014. This accounts for 72 percent of all contributions received in 2014.
Even so, many a donation may languish ungiven for want of a person to ask for it. Nonprofit board members and staff often recognize the need to fund their missions, yet lack the confidence or ability to make necessary requests.
To encourage the confidence to ask for a donation, the Nonprofit Resource Group is hosting a workshop called "The Art of the Ask" on Thursday, January 25, 2018, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Hidalgo Medical Services' Silver City Community Health Center, located at 1007 N. Pope Street.
Nonprofit Resource Group Manager, Joseph Hill said, "This was a capacity-building request voiced multiple times by participants during our recent Learning Circles series held in Silver City, Deming and Carlsbad." The Learning Circles were a series of ten nonprofit peer-to-peer conversations hosted in rural communities throughout New Mexico and funded by the generosity of the McCune Charitable Foundation.
"The Art of the Ask" workshop will be facilitated by Sunny Yates Kellerman, a consultant and executive coach, with 33 years' experience in nonprofit management, small business development and commercial law.
Kellerman said the workshop will aid participants to "free themselves from the fears associated with asking for money to support their nonprofit."
"We will craft and practice delivering a brief, and compelling talk to convey the unique role of a participant's nonprofit, and the need for potential donors to fund it," added Kellerman. According to Kellerman, the workshop will also help develop a "personal asking plan" for participants.
The three-hour workshop costs $25 to attend and is limited to 25 participants due to skill building exercises and individualized training offered.
