Silver City MainStreet/Arts & Cultural District is partnering with the Future Forge and various community groups and artists to offer an arts and cultural experience to residents of Grant county. Make-and-Take activities will be from 10 am to 2 pm every Saturday at the Maker’s Market at Main Street Plaza, May through October.
On Saturday, August 14, Sally Tilton invites you to make a paper feather while she demonstrates basic paper mache. The take home kits will include a choice of puffer fish or a trinket basket. And of course, the feather the participant makes is theirs to keep. “Happiness is being creative”, states Tilton. This is a free, family fun activity to do while at the Maker’s Market downtown.
Sally Tilton does not think of herself as an artist but instead a creative maker who is developing artistic skills for the joy of it. An admirer of arts and crafts and of those who create, she herself is inspired to create.
Sally lived in Southcentral Alaska for 51 years before leaving in search of a new place to call home. Wandering into Silver City in December 2018 via highway 152 over the Black Range, in the dark, it was WOW and wonder at first sight. She and husband, Pat now have set their transplanted roots here in Silver City Historic District.
Members of the Silver City Art Association are offering most of the scheduled Make-and-Takes. The Silver City Art Association is a non-profit organization of galleries, studios, and independent artists celebrating and supporting visual arts in Silver City, NM through promotion, events and education. They may be best known for the Red Dot Weekend at the Galleries.
The Future Forge is providing the space for the Make and Take table at the Maker’s Market, held May through October on Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm at the Main Street Plaza in downtown Silver City. This table will be used to offer free, family oriented activities for residents of Grant county. Silver City MainStreet offers a small stipend for supplies.
The purpose is to provide an arts and cultural experience for youth and families. Art experiences are not readily available in Grant county, and this is a great opportunity for youth to experience art and see Makers selling their work at the Maker’s Market. It makes art more relevant, especially as a way to earn income.
