SC Public Library added new tech devices for kids

IMG 1947Silver City Public Library has added new tech devices for kids to use in the library, as well as new software for teens.

 Playaway Launchpad tablets and a new AWE computer are now available for children to use, in the library only.

 The Launchpad tablets by Playaway are durable tablets with games on them that are meant to be shared. They come pre-loaded with games, so internet is not necessary and loading times are quick. Launchpad tablets are designed with an easy-to-use interface. The library has tablets from Playaway’s STEAM Academy and Reading Academy. They cover a range of activities and ages, for different skill levels and learning areas.

 The library has also added a new AWE computer with pre-loaded games—over 85 educational titles. No need to log in, just sit and play award-winning content. The computer is broken down into subject areas so kids can find what they are interested in and get started, from STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) to Language Arts to reading. “The new computer is for a slightly older audience, ages 8-12, while our other AWE computers are for ages 2-8,” explained Abigail Kipp, children’s and youth librarian. “So this new addition will keep the fun going as the kids grow.”

 

IMG 1948 Teens can let their imaginations run wild with Krita and GIMP, now installed on the computers in the library teen area. Krita is a painting software for making digital art. GIMP offers image manipulation, from small retouches to complex projects. Both are free open source software packages that combine a set of professional quality tools with a user-friendly interface. Online tutorials and a robust support community make it easy to learn and perfect your graphic design skills—visit krita.org and gimp.org. “The library is pleased to be able to offer support to teens who are developing their artistic talents, on their own or in classrooms,” said Lillian Galloway, library assistant director. “We look forward to seeing community members bring their ideas to life.”
