Facility to Increase Recreational Opportunities for Youth, Veterans and Seniors

Silver City -- Groundbreaking for the new community recreation center at the corner of Silver and 32nd streets will take place at 9:00 am, Friday, March 8.  Lieutenant Governor Howie Morales will speak, along with Silver City Mayor Ken Ladner.  Local elected officials, representatives from the architectural firm, students, members of the community steering committee, and others will be on hand to mark the occasion.

Mayor Ladner, who is credited with initiating the development of the new rec center,  expressed his appreciation for everyone who's been involved in bringing this project to fruition. 

" I especially want to recognize and thank our Town Manager Alex Brown for his strong leadership throughout this process, and I'm deeply grateful to Lt. Governor Morales, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, steering committee members, Assistant Town Manager James Marshall, Council of Governments Director Pricilla Lucero, and everyone who has provided input and guidance. It's a tremendous asset to our community."

The new $15.2 million recreation center is designed to increase recreational opportunities for everyone in Grant County and the region, with special emphasis on the needs of youth, veterans and senior citizens. The center totals 27,426-square feet, divided into three multi-use courts for various sports, including basketball, volleyball and pickle ball, which are surrounded by a walking/jogging lane. Other amenities include a multi-generation lounge, featuring table games and a designated electronic gaming area, as well as a large, divisible multi-purpose room, and an 800-square-foot group fitness room.
