Heinrich Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Sept. 23, 2016) -- U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), a member of the U.S. Senate Democratic Hispanic Task Force, released the following statement today in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month:

"The Hispanic community is an integral part of the economic, social, and cultural story of New Mexico and our nation. This month, we join in celebration of the many accomplishments, contributions, and sacrifices Hispanics have made to our country and look toward a bright future.

"Hispanic-Serving Institutions across New Mexico serve a tremendous role in our communities by educating our students, training our workforce, and developing the next generation of New Mexican leaders. There are currently 23 Hispanic-Serving Institutions in New Mexico, including the University of New Mexico and New Mexico State University.

"I remain deeply committed to addressing the issues that matter most to Hispanics in our state. The Hispanic community is not defined by a single issue and must be at the table as we strive to build and maintain a stronger, inclusive, and thriving middle class."

Senator Heinrich is a cosponsor of the Hispanic Heritage Month Resolution to recognize Hispanic Heritage Month beginning September 15, 2016, and the Hispanic-Serving Institutions Resolution to designate the week beginning September 12, 2016, as National Hispanic-Serving Institutions Week.
