Permanent Home of Social Arts Exhibit—One Million Bones
Silver City, NM – February 21, 2019 – One Million Bones—a nationally recognized social art installation raising awareness of genocide and mass atrocities across the globe—has found its permanent home at Bear Mountain Lodge in the Silver City, New Mexico area. The art installation was dedicated in early 2018, and is now on display for visitors and locals.
Initially unveiled at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. with 1,000,000 handcrafted bones, One Million Bones—a project of The Art of Revolution, whose work seeks to use art to inspire activism—has traveled to various cities across the U.S. to inform, educate, and raise awareness. Honoring victims of genocide, the remaining 30,000 ceramic bones from the National Mall were laid in the wilderness of the Bear Mountain Lodge, where they will remain.
“In Silver City, we value art, culture, and history, and we know the importance of spreading awareness for and speaking out against atrocities worldwide,” said Alex Brown, Town of Silver City Manager. “This incredible art installation sheds light on pressing issues around the world, and we’re honored to have it permanently displayed in the Silver City area. Whether you’re a local, or you’re in town visiting, it’s a powerful art exhibit and a must-see.”
The art installation serves to spark engagement and action to end ongoing conflicts and genocide. In addition to the permanent display, there are ongoing education efforts in area schools, and individuals can make their own bones to add to the original installation through workshops at Syzygy Tile in Silver City.
“Silver City is a destination commonly visited by artists and art lovers,” added Brown. “On your next visit, be sure to stop by the One Million Bones installation and attend a workshop to make handcrafted bones to add to the installation. It is our hope, as the permanent home of One Million Bones, that it will continue to move and educate people, as well as to inspire positive action.”
