SANTA FE – The drop box at the Child Support Enforcement Division office located at 653 Utah Avenue, in Las Cruces, N.M. was vandalized on November 4, 2020, announced the New Mexico Human Services Department.
Employees discovered the vandalism in the morning of November 4. A camera on site showed an individual using a battery-operated grinder to grind the lock off of the drop box just before 5 a.m. that Tuesday morning. The drop box has since been replaced, and a police report has been filed.
There were no envelopes in the box when the vandalism was recognized just after 8 a.m. The drop box was last checked the previous day around 5 p.m. Anyone who may have dropped of any paperwork or payments between 5 p.m. on November 3, and 5 a.m. on November 4, are encouraged to contact the Las Cruces Child Support Enforcement Office through the Consolidated Customer Service Center at 1-800-283-4465.
“These drop boxes were installed at all child support offices during the COVID-19 pandemic to provide a safer way of dropping off documents and non-cash payments,” said Jeremy Toulouse, Child Support Enforcement Division, director. “It is a shame that someone would try to benefit from safety efforts and impact people’s child support cases. We are hopeful that the Las Cruces police can identify the vandal through the on-site camera.”
