NMDOT Unveils the First Truck Parking Availability System in the State

real-time truck parking information now available on I-10

SANTA FE, NM – The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) announces the completion of its $2.7 million truck parking initiative, unveiling the state’s first Truck Parking Availability System (TPAS).  This is groundbreaking technology and is a critical tool to enhance safety for truck drivers traveling the 164 miles of Interstate 10 (I-10) in New Mexico.

Truck drivers can now use electronic road signs and the state's 511 system to locate available parking at all six rest areas along I-10 in New Mexico, including the east and westbound Lordsburg Welcome Centers, westbound Anthony and Gage rest areas, and the eastbound Yucca and Las Cruces rest areas. The state will also work with application developers to integrate truck parking information into various trucking apps.

Heinrich, Klobuchar, Blackburn, and Thune Introduce Bipartisan Bill to Enhance 9-1-1 Emergency Response System

The legislation would ensure Americans reach help when dialing 9-1-1 during natural disasters and make important updates to the classification of 9-1-1 dispatchers 

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), and John Thune (R-S.D.) introduced the Enhancing First Response Act, which would make important updates to our 9-1-1 emergency reporting system to ensure Americans can reach help when they dial 9-1-1 during natural disasters. The legislation will also ensure 9-1-1 dispatchers are recognized as protective service workers to ensure their job classification appropriately recognizes the lifesaving nature of their work. This legislation is also co-sponsored by U.S. Senators Angus King (I-Maine) and Ted Budd (R-N.C.).

NMSU completes successful multi-agency crisis management training

New Mexico State University and several local, state and federal agencies participated Thursday in the second of two planned trainings this week, focusing on the treatment of an unconscious man that led to a possible hazardous materials investigation. 

U.S. Army North, which is responsible for developing and sustaining training and response capabilities for numerous Civil Support Teams throughout the U.S. and its territories, coordinated both exercises for the 64th Civil Support Team, based out of Rio Rancho, New Mexico.

NMSU music professor releases milestone jazz album, live performances in February

For more than 30 years, Regents professor of music Jim Shearer has been teaching students at New Mexico State University the history, influence and beauty of jazz. An accomplished tubist and mentor, Shearer has released records, written textbooks and performed with different musicians around the world. At the end of 2023, Shearer made history when he released “Cloud Bowling with Claude Bolling” with Summit Records.


In February, Shearer will celebrate the album’s release with live concert performances at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2 in NMSU’s Atkinson Recital Hall and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7 in the Fox Fine Arts Recital Hall at the University of Texas at El Paso. Both performances are free and open to the public.
