bettyhookerBetty Jane Hooker, 92, resident of Cliff, NM entered eternal rest on Tuesday August 16, 2022 at her home in Cliff after a brief illness. She was born October 18, 1929 in Grants, NM to Oscar Carter and Caroline (Boatman) Carter. 

She is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth Allred (Bruce) of Silver City; three sons, David Hooker (Paula) of Gila, Stuart Hooker of Silver City, and Jeff Hooker (Cindy) of Cliff; 13 Grandchildren, 37 Great Grandchildren and 17 Great-Great-Grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years Donald Hooker, her parents Oscar and Caroline Carter, one sister Lenore Stober, three brothers; Oscar Carter Jr., Jack Carter and Lynn Carter, and a son in law Bruce Allred.

She grew up in Thoreau, NM and graduated from Gallup High School. She attended college at Western New Mexico University where she met and fell in love with Donald Hooker. They were soon married on November 29, 1947 in Gallup, NM. They made their life in Gila and Cliff, NM as ranchers and farmers. They were very active in the community.

She was a wife, mother and homemaker. She was active and a leader in many organizations including Women's Club, Farm Bureau, the Grant County Fair, Cowbelles and many more. She was known for her cooking, sewing, quilting and crocheting skills. Many people treasure the quilts and afghans she made for them. She also became an accomplished artist and loved to paint pictures. She loved to travel and visited every part of the country when she and Donald spent time as truck drivers for JB Hunt Trucking.

She was very strong in her faith. She was baptized in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on June 17, 1978. She had many callings in the Church and attended and participated as long as she was able. She had many friends who checked in on her over the last years of her life and she loved the time she was able to spend with them.

Visitation will be Wednesday, August 31 at 10am at The LDS church in Gila, NM. The funeral service will commence at 11am with Pastor Esker Mayberry officiating. Concluding the service and interment will follow at Gila-Mesa cemetery.
