Major Wins for N.M. Military Installations, National Labs, & Service Members

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) welcomed Senate passage of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2024 (FY24). The legislation includes major wins that Heinrich secured, including investments in New Mexico’s service members, military installations, national labs, and job-creating initiatives throughout the state. The legislation now heads to the U.S. House of Representatives for final passage, then to President Joe Biden’s desk to be signed into law.

NMSU’s Museum Conservation program founder retires

Nearly 30 years after coming to New Mexico State University as a student, Silvia Marinas-Feliner is retiring from the Department of Art at the end of the year as a beloved professor as well as the founder and director of the Museum Conservation program ­– now one of only two programs of its kind in the U.S. for undergraduates.


 
By 2000, Marinas-Feliner had served as the acting director for about a year and a half for what was then called NMSU’s Art Gallery, after years of serving as its art conservator. In 2001, she was asked to establish the Museum Conservation program. First, she did research, approaching the top museum conservation programs in the country.

NMSU’s Farmington science center supports efforts to promote Indigenous agricultural practices

On a clear summer day in July, New Mexico State University’s Agricultural Science Center at Farmington buzzed with activity across its sprawling 254-acre research farm.


 
Interns Korbin Nakai and Melvin Cooley stationed themselves in the vineyard, pruning leafy green vines. Farm manager Dallen Begay drove a plot combine across a field of waist-high heirloom wheat, harvesting grain. A trio of graduate research assistants – Brandon Francis, Emiliano McLane and Bhimsen Shresth – collected data for their thesis projects.

NMDOT Public Meeting San Antonio Interchange

The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) is developing the design of the proposed improvements to the Interstate 25 (I-25) San Antonio Interchange, which is approximately 0.5 miles west of San Antonio, New Mexico, between Milepost (MP) 139 and MP 140. I-25 connects with US 380, which is the main road into the nearby community of San Antonio.

Republican Legislators Call for Rejection of PED Rule Change

Proposed rule regarding instructional time subverts the will of the Legislature, local school districts

SANTA FE—Today, Republican legislators from the Senate and House of Representatives issued a joint letter to the Public Education Department (PED) and Secretary Arsenio Romero urging the rejection of a proposed rule regarding instructional time. The rule proposes a mandated 5-day school week and 180 days of instructional time for public schools—a deviation from the expanded learning hours recently approved by the Legislature. The letter was signed by Eunice School Board Member Senator David Gallegos (R-Eunice); Senate Republican Leader, Senator Greg Baca (R-Belen); former Rio Rancho School Board Member, Senator Craig Brandt (R-Rio Rancho); Senator Pat Woods (R-Broadview); High School Teacher, Representative Tanya Mirabal Moya (R-Belen); and School Administrator, Representative Brian Baca (R-Los Lunas).

In-Person Car Seat Inspection to be Held in Las Cruces

LAS CRUCES – The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the New Mexico Department of Transportation Traffic Safety Division (NMDOT TSD) and Safer New Mexico Now will host an in-person Car Seat Inspection Clinic from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday, December 19, 2023, at the Las Cruces NMDOT Office, 750 North Solano Drive, in Las Cruces. This free educational event provides parents and caregivers instruction on the proper selection, installation and use of their car seats from nationally certified child passenger safety technicians.

Heinrich Leads Legislation to Reauthorize, Fully Fund Southwest Border Regional Commission 

Legislation would help strengthen economic development efforts, modernize infrastructure, and improve quality of life in southern border communities in New Mexico, Arizona, California, and Texas

WASHINGTON –U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, introduced the Southwest Border Regional Commission Reauthorization Act, legislation to reauthorize and fully fund the Southwest Border Regional Commission (SBRC). The SBRC is one of eight authorized federal regional commissions and authorities, which are congressionally-chartered, federal-state partnerships created to promote economic development in their respective regions. 

The bill is cosponsored by U.S. Senators Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.), Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.), Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), Kyrsten Sinema (I-Ariz.), and Laphonza Butler (D-Calif.).
