Henderson selected as NMSU’s new general counsel

Lisa Henderson has been selected as New Mexico State University’s new general counsel and chief legal affairs officer, the university announced this week. In this position, Henderson will serve as NMSU’s primary attorney, providing legal guidance and services. Henderson previously served as associate general counsel at Oklahoma City Community College. She began her new position at NMSU on Friday, Dec. 15. 



“Lisa brings to NMSU a wealth of knowledge about the legal issues facing higher education and a track record as a highly effective public attorney,” NMSU President Jay Gogue said. “We are excited to have her on board.”

NMDA hires veteran journalist as new Director of Public Affairs

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico Department of Agriculture (NMDA) has hired Shelton Dodson to serve as its new Director of Public Affairs. Before joining NMDA, Dodson worked as a broadcast journalist for 24 years in New Mexico and Texas, covering news in southern New Mexico for 22 years.

A native New Mexican and graduate of Los Lunas High School, Dodson earned a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism from New Mexico State University in 1994 and accepted his first job at KVIA-TV in El Paso the same year. During his time at KVIA, Dodson reported and anchored in both news and sports and worked as a videographer and editor for many stories. Dodson also held similar roles at KENS5-TV in San Antonio, Texas, KOB-TV in Albuquerque, and KFOX-TV and KDBC-TV, both in El Paso.

Heinrich Announces Nominees To The US Service Academies

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) announced his nominees to the United States Service Academies. A nomination is required to attend the U.S. Military Academy (West Point), the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy; the U.S. Coast Guard Academy does not require a nomination.   

Being nominated is a significant honor. The application process is rigorous, and only the most qualified and meritorious candidates receive a nomination.

NMSU Library permanently houses award-winning photographs featuring White Sands National Park

It’s a vast, dreamy landscape many in the Southwest feel lucky to have in their own backyard. Whether you are sledding down the soft waves of sand, spending time with family and friends, or simply admiring its beauty, White Sands National Park is a sight to see – and you can experience a glimpse of it at New Mexico State University’s Library.  


 
New Mexico State University Archives and Special Collections recently acquired the photographic exhibition called "Into the Great White Sands: Photographs by Craig Varjabedian.” An award-winning photographer, Varjabedian said this project is the result of his decade-long effort to capture the breathtaking beauty and natural elements of White Sands.

New Mexico linked to national Salmonella outbreak in cantaloupes

SANTA FE--Two New Mexico patients with Salmonella have been identified by the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) connected to the ongoing national outbreak involving cantaloupes. Both patients, one from Bernalillo County and one from Doña Ana County, have recovered.  

Currently, 38 states have been linked to this outbreak, with 230 people affected, 96 hospitalized, and 3 deaths. Adults 65 and older, children under 5 years, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to get very sick from Salmonella. In this outbreak nationally, 24 sick people have resided in long-term care facilities and 23 children attended childcare centers before they got sick. The Food and Drug Administration has issued a recall for Malichita and Rudy brand whole cantaloupes, with sticker number “4050” as seen below:

NMSU Farmington science center builds agricultural resilience across the Four Corners region

About 400 miles north of Las Cruces sits a science center that plays a vital role in research for NMSU.
 


The Agricultural Science Center at Farmington operates on 254 acres of land leased from the Navajo Nation, which has also been an important collaborator in
several of the center’s research and community projects.


 
It is the only center within the NMSU Agricultural Experiment Station west of the Continental Divide and the only 1862 land-grant science center to work directly on sovereign First Nations land. The center’s overall mission is to conduct research and develop educational programs that meet the needs of the San Juan County agricultural community, Navajo Nation, New Mexico and the Four Corners region. Its vision is to build agricultural resilience with innovative science that respects cultural values across the region and beyond.
