NMSU opens doors to new agricultural buildings

Dozens of Aggies and community members came together on New Mexico State University’s Las Cruces campus Friday, Nov. 3, as the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences opened the doors to two new cutting-edge facilities that will benefit the state’s agriculture industry and modernize education at NMSU.
 


The ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the completion of the Food Science, Security and Safety Center and the Animal Nutrition and Feed Manufacturing Facility. The event drew several dignitaries, elected officials and industry partners. Speakers included New Mexico Lt. Gov. Howie Morales, state Rep. Jack Chatfield and Acting Deputy Secretary of the New Mexico Higher Education Department Gerald Hoehne.

State Parks to honor local military veterans, active-duty, and National Guard members with free state park access on Veterans Day

Day-use and camping fees to be waived for the federal holiday on Saturday, November 11

Santa Fe, NM – On Veterans Day, the Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department (EMNRD) State Parks Division will honor New Mexico veterans, active military, National Guard and their dependents with free access to any of its 35 state parks.

“Our veterans and active-duty military deserve our utmost respect and admiration for their sacrifice in serving New Mexico and our country,” said Toby Velasquez, State Parks Director. “Giving them free access to State Parks on November 11th is an opportunity for service members to experience some of the most beautiful landscapes in The Land of Enchantment.”

This also means that trees are shedding their leaves and dropping their needles.  As these burnable materials pile up, they start to form a fuel bed and can quickly become a fire hazard under dry conditions. In the event of a wildfire, those unassuming leaves and needles become a fuel source for floating embers. Sometimes known as “duff,” this mixture of dry vegetation can ignite easily, allowing a wildfire tospread right up to the walls and roof of your home.

The ninth-annual HomeGrown event will take place on Saturday, Nov. 18, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 19, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is $10 per vehicle, and the first 100 vehicles at the event each day will receive a free burlap shopping bag. Cash is encouraged for admission.

SANTA FE – Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham will renew executive orders declaring gun violence a public health emergency on Friday. The governor’s multi-pronged strategy is demonstrating progress
as shown on the state’s gun violence dashboard.
The renewal extends the emergency to Dec. 1, 2023, ensuring that progress continues.

Mexican Wolf Located North of Interstate 40 in Northwest New Mexico

A female wolf (F2754) has been documented crossing out of the Mexican Wolf Experimental Population Area (MWEPA) north of Interstate 40 in New Mexico. The wolf is affixed with a radio collar, which is transmitting its location. She was documented crossing the I-40 boundary west of Albuquerque late last week. Her last location was in the Jemez Mountains west of Jemez Springs. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish are monitoring the wolf’s movements.
