Unitarian Universalist Flower Ceremony

RevJohnsonAugust 27, at 10 am, 3845 North Swan Street –  “Unitarian Universalist Flower Ceremony”

The Flower Ceremony is a special Unitarian Universalist "ritual" in an organization that doesn't have traditional sacraments.

Rev. Mana’ar Johnsons will explain the inspiring history behind the ceremony, begun by a European minister who died in a concentration camp.

“It allows us an opportunity to reflect on our community, its beauty and diversity. We consider what gifts we bring, symbolized by a flower we offer, and we are grateful for what others bring to our fellowship. We take home a different flower to remind us of our own beauty and that of others in our lives,” Johnson said.

“It will include beautiful poetry and music, and beautiful photos by Andrew Tree of the wildflowers of Grant County, NM. Bring a single flower with you, but don't worry if you forget, we will have a few extras,” she added.

Doors: 7:00pm / Music: 7:30pm
A Portland-based, Indie Dance-Punk band comprised of singer and guitarist Jessa Graves, bass player Kelly Clifton and drummer Aaron MacDonald – explores the relationship around tense rock, sanguine lyricism, chord changes that sound like secret longing, and a rhythm section that thuds, skitters, and melts over the determined voice of Jessa Graves.
"reckoning with guilt, loss and acceptance; it's a heavy topic, set against the band's appropriately thudding garage-rock sound and singer Jessa Graves' passionate and powerful voice… shows off the band's tightly-coiled performance energy…” —Marissa Lorusso NPR All Songs Considered

Grant County's Rodeo History Topic of Saturday Museum Program

SCRodeo1939 Silver City --  Silver City Museum Curator Javier Marrufo will facilitate this month's community conversation, “This Ain’t My First Go Round - Rodeo Roots in Grant County,” Saturday beginning at 11:00 am at the historic Silco Theater in downtown Silver City.  Marrufo will explore local rodeo history and culture with local western history buffs, Don Turner and JoAnn Miller, and share numerous photos collected from 1910 to 1978 to spur conversation with program participants.

Miller is an organizer of Silver City’s annual Wild West Rodeo at Southwest Horseman’s Arena, and a member of the Copper County CowBelles, while Turner is considered an "honorable sheriff" with the local chapter of Westerners, a group of Western history enthusiasts. He also participated in the creation and celebration of the museum's popular exhibit, “Ranching in Grant County.”

Book Talk: Buffalo Chips & Co. by Marilyn Wiley

MarilynWileyMarilyn Wiley, a real pioneer woman, will be giving a presentation at the Silver City Public Library Thursday August 31, at 3:30pm.  She will share her adventures along a 1200 mile wagon trip that lasted eighteen months and crossed three states. In 1983, Marilyn harnessed up a team of horses to a wagon in central Texas and pointed them west. The trail ended near her destination, Prescott, Arizona. This was not a financed expedition. It was an act of desperation to escape a difficult situation. She left with less than $5 in her pocket, with two children and livestock to feed and care for along the way. She was determined to reach her destination, even if she had to walk. Hardships were many. Marilyn's talents, sense of humor, ingenuity and perseverance helped her make it through each day. Marilyn says she wears a hat that says "Don't Tell Me What I Can't Do!"   Come and spend an hour with Marilyn as she relives the day to day life on the trail.  Dust storms, deserts, rattlesnakes and horse thieves. It's an adventure you won't want to miss!

The Silver Public Library is thrilled to host Marilyn Wiley’s inspiring presentation. For more information call the library at (575) 538-3672 or email at programs@silvercitypubliclibrary.org . The Silver City Public Library is located at 515 W. College Avenue and online at  silvercitypubliclibrary.org .
