Dear Editor,
This is in response to Lynda Schub's recent comments about Representative Luis Terrazas and Senate Bills 17 and 18.
Ms. Schub suggested that opposing SB 18-the "Clear Horizons Act" – means not caring about clean air. That's an oversimplification and simply not true. The bill would have required industries to cut emissions to levels that would significantly raise costs across agriculture, energy, manufacturing, and transportation. For many of us already struggling with expenses, that matters. I would like to know where Mr. Turrieta stands on this? Would he support a bill like this which would have affected his constituents in a negative way?
SB 17 also raised concerns. It would have restricted access to commonly owned firearms for law-abiding citizens while doing nothing to improve safety. I appreciate [District 39] Rep. Luis Terrazas supporting our constitutional rights, and I would like to hear Mr. Turrieta's position as well. Would he defend my right to defend myself if needed?
Lastly, and maybe the most compelling thing about SB 17 and SB 18 is that it wasn't just Republicans who defeated those bills. Both Republicans and some Democrats joined in opposition, making sure neither bill passed. Democrats have a near super majority in both the House and Senate. If they wanted those bills to pass, they would have passed. Anytime Republicans and Democrats join together in opposition to defeat a bill, it is more than likely a poorly crafted piece of public policy that would do far more harm than good. Good intentions don't always lead to good outcomes. We, as New Mexicans, deserve policies that are both effective and sustainable. I appreciate Rep. Terrazas for always being informed and thoughtful as he considers the right path forward.
Respectfully,
Christine Murillo Starr
