Entry- and mid-level permanent positions available

(Silver City, NM, August 25, 2026) — The Gila National Forest is hiring dedicated individuals to support fire operations. These positions are vital to wildfire preparedness and disaster response across federal and state agencies.

Jobs include dispatchers, fire engine operators, fire prevention specialists, forestry aids and technicians, handcrew members, helitack crew members, hotshot crew members, prescribed fire and fuels specialists, and more. Entry-level and mid-level career opportunities are available.

Single-lane closures may cause short-term delays for travelers

(Reserve, NM, August 24, 2026) — Starting this week, the Gila National Forest is working with a contractor to maintain and improve 18 miles of Forest Road 141 (FR 141, Reserve-Beaverhead Road), the primary access road from Reserve to the forest. The project will continue through early to mid-November when winter weather conditions set in. Weather permitting, work will resume in spring of 2027 with an anticipated July 2027 completion date. 

At least one lane of traffic will remain open on weekends during construction, but single-lane road closures will likely result in short-term delays for travelers for the duration of the project. Full road closures may occur on weekdays from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with possible 24-hour closures on Tuesdays or Wednesdays as needed for construction operations. Signage will be present along the roadway to inform travelers of closures.

Recently, the Unitarian Universalist Association has transitioned from the seven principles that formerly guided UU congregations to a set of Shared Values centered in Love. This week will be a multigenerational program exploring the shared value of Pluralism. We will use story, sharing, and playful interaction to discern how our different histories and beliefs comingle to create one vibrant, pluralistic UU community. 

This program is designed to be meaningful for participants of all ages.  UUFSC is presenting multigenerational programs on fifth Sundays in 2026. After August 30, the final program will be on November 29th.

Come see the amazing documentary Frequency, by local filmmaker Kaia Roman, The film has been winning film festivals  and being shown all over the world and United States. The showing will be at WNMU Light Hall and Kaia Roman will be available for questions after the showing. 

Frequency is an exploration of the unseen forces that shape our reality and an investigation into promising solutions to major problems, featuring well known scientists like Dr. Joe Dispenza, Bruce Lipton, and Gregg Braden.

(Glenwood, NM, August 19, 2026) — Beginning Monday, Aug. 24, Bighorn and Cosmic campgrounds along US-180 north of Glenwood will temporarily close while crews install shade ramadas. This upgrade will provide sheltered, covered areas for visitors at these campgrounds with limited tree cover. The campgrounds are expected to reopen on Saturday, Aug. 29, construction permitting. 

Heavy machinery will be operating within the campgrounds throughout the installation period to dig foundations and move construction materials. For public and worker safety, please do not enter either campground while construction is underway.

Alternative developed camping access is available at Cottonwood Campground, approximately 11 miles north of Cosmic Campground. Primitive, dispersed camping sites exist along many Forest Service roads in the area. Please ensure campfires are fully extinguished before you leave and pack out all trash.
