[Editor's Note: Grant County commissioners held a short special meeting right before a long work session on Nov. 14, 2023. This is the first of a series of articles covering them and later the regular meeting on Nov. 16. 2023.]

Grant County Commission Chair Chris Ponce at the meeting beginning at 9 a.m. on Nov. 14, 2023, noted that the special meeting would take place first to address the recent election canvass of votes. "We will hold this one first, then adjourn and go directly into the work session."
After approval of the agenda, Ponce announced public input.
Snell to have wellness rooms

The Cobre Consolidated School Board held a meeting on November 13, 2023. Board members in attendance included, , Gilbert Guadiana, Serena Murillo, David Terrazas (online) and Elizabeth Dean (online). Acting superintendent Michael Koury also attended online. Gabriella Begay did not attend.
Kiwanis had two students of the month awards. They had not been able to attend, and Guadiana presented them.
Melanie Baca a senior at Cobre High School maintains a 3.8 GPA. She always challenges herself and has become very confident. She can be found taking photos at the track many times. She also excels in volleyball.
Angelita Aveles attends Snell Middle School and has been a great role model to the other students and an excellent student.
Hurley opening library in January

The town of Hurley held a special meeting November 14, 2023. Attendance to the meeting included Mayor Ed Stevens, councilors Nanette Day and Keana Huerta. Reynaldo Maynes did not attend.
The council approved the consent agenda. Lori Ortiz, city clerk, gave the council an update on how the Copper Cleanup went. It had been a little slow, but it will be an annual event and possibly the next one would be in the spring when the weather would be a little warmer. They had looked at new Christmas decorations, garlands for the poles but if they purchase them, they will have to do every other one. Maintenance will put up a tree to decorate in December. Next year they will add some more new decorations.
Independent Artists hold Holiday Market two days

Bayard approves additional officer.

The town of Bayard held a regular meeting October 23, 2023. Attendance included Mayor Chon Fierro, councilors Frances Gonzales, Eloy Gonzales, Jose Diaz, and Eloy Medina. Gabriel Ramos, city clerk, also attended.
The work session before the regular meeting allows the council to ask questions about items on the agenda.
Ramos updated the council on the grant they had received. Jenny Castanon secured a grant for the renovation of the union hall. This will be the second grant for the property and will bring a total of approximately $200,000.
SC-GC Chamber of Commerce luncheon featured County Resilience Action Plan Summary

The Silver City-Grant County Chamber of Commerce hosted several speakers who continue to participate in creating a Grant County Resilience Action Plan.
Laura Phelps, Social Performance Manager| Freeport-McMoRan | New Mexico Operations, led off the effort with an online survey for attendees to choose what they thought were the greatest issues in Grant County. The number 1 issue, according to luncheon guests, consists of behavioral health and substance abuse. Other issues identified by attendees included housing, the economy and workforce, water issues and food insecurity.
