Copper Should Be "Made in the USA"
Washington, D.C. - In an effort to put American workers first, President Trump announced new tariffs on foreign copper imports to spur domestic production and and reduce reliance on adversarial nations. The proposal signals a major step toward revitalizing a critical industry that powers everything from national defense to electronics. The move is also in contrast to the Biden Administration, which unilaterally shut down American projects in favor of imported copper.
“President Trump understands that America has plenty of copper to reenergize our economy and build a stronger nation,” said Daniel Turner, Founder and Executive Director for Power The Future. “make no mistake: The same green groups who will scream about American copper mining are perfectly fine when it is done in China under slave labor and zero environmental rules. President Trump’s tariff plan puts America first and that’s what really upsets green activists the most.”
Under former President Biden, major American copper projects were shut down by executive fiat. His administration issued orders against both the Pebble Mine in Alaska and halted copper production on Minnesota’s Twin Metals project. Green groups cheered those decisions even though they handed a strategic advantage to foreign suppliers, particularly China.
