PTF Analysis Shows Sanders' Travel Emitted More CO₂ Than an Average American Produces in Five Years
Washington, D.C. - While U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders crisscrossed the country this spring to denounce the excesses of the wealthy and rail against climate change, a shocking report sheds new light on one of the most carbon-intensive luxuries available: private jets. Across the 16-city "Fighting Oligarchy" tour, Sanders' private jet travel emitted more than 60.7 metric tonnes of CO₂ which is the equivalent of driving a gas-powered SUV 150,000 miles. That’s more carbon than the average American produces in five years and 44 times more CO₂ per leg than flying commercial.
"Bernie Sanders has no problem demanding that Americans make sacrifices in the name of climate change, but when it comes to his own comfort, he would rather torch jet fuel at 30,000 feet than wait in line like the rest of us." said Daniel Turner, Founder and Executive Director for Power The Future. "His hypocrisy isn’t just outrageously brazen—it’s exhaustingly predictable."
Despite readily available commercial flights for nearly every leg of his tour, Sanders, a self-avowed socialist, reportedly spent over $221,000 of donor money on private jets. During a recent interview with Fox News’ Bret Baier, Sanders confirmed the private travel, dismissing concerns by saying, "Think I am going to be sitting on a waiting line at United?"
According to the analysis, the emissions from Sanders' tour would require the work of 2,892 mature trees absorbing CO₂ for a year to offset the damage.
